SCC aims to provide 40,000 meals through donations

Last year, agency Shafer Condon Carter’s Big Wreath Food Project to feed the hungry through the Greater Chicago Food Depository resulted in 18,000 meals contributed by SCC’s 115 employees, partners and friends.

But this year, CEO Tim Condon, organized the West Loop Food Project with neighborhood business partners, to achieve the more ambitious goal of 40,000 meals, “because the need is greater.”

In Illinois alone, an estimated 1.8 million people face hunger, while one-in-five Illinois children don’t have enough to eat.

Food Depository donations go far in making a daily impact across Cook County. Its wholesale purchase power and efficient distribution can double or even triple the amount of food that a dollar can buy at a regular grocery store.

And to further increase the impact, SCC will donate $1 for every non-perishable item and/or every $1 donated, up to $10,000.

CEO Tim CondonFood and cash contributions to the Food Depository can be easily made through the West Loop Holiday Project website or by visiting one of its partners in the West Loop Food Project: Athletico West Loop United Center, Beer Bistro, Crosstown Fitness, Old Fifth Restaurant & Bar, Crossroads Bar & Grill, Herzog Store Fixtures, Monteverde Restaurant, Cone Ice Cream Shop, Third Rail Tavern, Vincenzo’s Bar & Grill and its client, Uncle Dougie’s.

Each of the current retail businesses has installed a barrel or large bin for non-perishable food collections in their establishments.  Food Project partner Herzog Store Fixtures will be the consolidation point for the filled food barrels for Food Depository pickups.

“Last year we had over 500 pounds of food, which takes up a lot of space,” says Condon, who is looking for more than twice that weight from “all our generous Food Project neighbors.”

SCC’s food barrel is located in the lobby of its building, at 1029 W. Madison.
