Two+One expands into education, narrative, and documentary

John Yaworsky of Two+One

Whether he’s shooting out of a sea kayak or commemorating the centennial of the paperclip, corporate producer/director John Yaworsky of Two+One is continually adapting to a market that increasingly demands new efficiencies and innovations.

“One of the bigger developments in communications is that a project used to only need one use, like straight marketing or employee communications,” said Yaworsky, who provides motion, still and new media production services.

“Then for years one use wasn’t enough and it had to be two; also operate as an orientation piece for instance. Now everything needs to have three purposes, like also streaming on the web for public consumption.”

Yaworsky is expanding beyond his base of high-end corporate clients into more documentary, educational, and narrative work. A doc he produced with Constance Mortell of Prairie Tide Productions about the construction of the Illinois-Michigan Canal played at the Native American Film Festival in Palm Springs and is now moving into the educational market.

“Being small and having a varied background allows me to wear the different hats that clients require for their projects,” Yaworsky said.

Yaworsky has begun exploring new avenues for work by partnering with new producers who have existing clients or ongoing projects, often narrative. He’s working as a producer and script consultant on a number of independent shorts that are in development, and he directed a 16mm short based on an Alfred Hitchcock short story for iFilm, to celebrate Hitchcock’s centennial.

“I enjoy teaching and working with people with new ideas,” Yaworsky said. “I have a fine arts background and I’m enjoying getting back into that and being less commerce-based and more art- based.”

Wilmette-based Two+One maintains a corporate clientele despite a tighter market. Yaworksy created a marketing spot for the 100th anniversary of Fortune Brands’ Acco, “the company that brought us the paper clip. That was an interesting challenge. We approached it by showing all the innovations that were coming out alongside the paperclip, like the lightbulb and the 3-ring binder and the Model T.”

Yaworsky has begun an ongoing series of marketing spots for adventure travel company The Northwest Passage. “I’ve been a climber for years, so this has allowed me to combine my interests in film and adventure travel. I’ve shot sea kayaking and mountain biking pieces for them, concentrating on their family adventure travel program. For upcoming spots I’ll probably go with them to the Alps or the Poles.”

A veteran of fashion video company Art+Science Films, and a former partner in One World Productions, Yaworsky started Two+One in 1990. His clients include Harris, Bank of Montreal, Coopers & Lybrand, Motorola and Nortel. He’s developing projects with DePaul, Northwestern, and Northern Illinois universities.
